First Steps

Where to begin…

Get ready to begin your educational journey.

Registration is available from 8:30am – 12:30 pm, Monday – Friday.
Our programs schedule follows the Schenectady City School District calendar, found here.

If you are interested in attending class at one of our community locations, you may choose to register and test at 80 Nott Terrace,
or you may complete that process at the class location you plan on attending.

Please know that testing and registration is only available at these locations during the posted class time.

Step 1: Arrive and Sign In

Our main location is at 80 Nott Terrace.
The front door is controlled by the person at the front desk.
You will be buzzed into the building, then sign in at the front desk. Let them know you are interested in signing up for classes.

You can wait in the lobby until Ms. Cris, or another member of the guidance team can assist you with your registration paperwork.

Please Note:
-It is best to arrive early if you plan on completing the registration process in one day.
-You can arrive as early as 8:30.

Step 2: Guidance

You will go to the guidance office to fill out the registration paperwork and discuss which class will best suit your needs.

New students will need to go to testing next.
Returning students will be told if they need to test before going to class.

Please Note:
-Part of the registration process involves questions that we need answered because it is tied to the funding for our program.
-The reason our program is free, is due to the information that is provided during the registration process.
-It is not tied to you personally, but rather, to our program. This information proves to the state that we are providing a useful service to our community.

Step 3: Testing

In order to provide the most helpful learning experience, your teacher will need to know what your strengths and weaknesses are. These are timed exams, but this is not a pass or fail test.
Just do your best and it will give your teacher the information they need to get you started on the right foot.

If you are a new student you will need to take a locator test, which is a quick practice test covering topics in reading and math before taking the slightly longer TABE Test, which is also divided into reading and math.

After testing has been completed, you will be taken to class.
Your teacher will explain your scores and give you work that aligns with your next test.

Please Note:
-If you have passed the math GED section, or have passing regents credit in NYS for math, you will only need to take the reading section of the TABE test.
-If you only need to pass the math on the GED, you will only take the math section of the TABE test.
-The science and social studies section of the GED are predominantly reading exams, and therefore, if you still need to pass these sections you will still need to take the TABE test for reading, even if you have passing scores for the reading, language arts section.

Please note:
The above process is for registration at 80 Nott Terrace.

If you wish to attend the class at our Henry St location you will follow the same procedure as listed above.
